The Luninets district is founded on 15th January, 1940. The district is situated in the East of the Brest region in a zone of Belarusian Polesye. In the West it shares the borders with Pinsk, in the South with Stolin, in the North with Gantsevichi districts of the Brest region. The Luninets district is one from three districts of Brest region, the most suffered from the Chernobyl accident in 1986. 2/3 of the territory is polluted.

The territory of the district makes 2,7 thousands of square meters. An extension from the West to the East makes 73 km, from the North to the South – 65 km. About 40 percents of the territory are occupied with forests. In 82 inhabited localities 79 thousand people live, from them in the town Luninets – 24 thousand, in the working settlement Mikashevichi – 13,7 thousand, other – in rural settlements.

The highest place above the Baltic Sea – 152 m, the lowest – 128 m. There are following minerals here: granite, peat, sand, loam, sapropel.

Through the territory of district the rivers Pripyat, Tsna, Bobrik, Wolkhva, Lanj, Smerdj flow. The channels Volchanskiy, Luninetskiy, Mikashevichskiy burrowed through. The biggest lakes are: Beloye – the centre of the Republican reserve, Chernoye and Vulkovskoye. Two reservoirs Velutskoe and Sobelskoe nourish a land-reclamation system.

The railway highways Brest-Gomel, Lvov-Riga, automobile highways Brest-Briansk, Luninets-Pinsk, Luninets-Baranovichi, Mikashevichi-Minsk cross the district. There is also a river port «Mikashevichi».
